10 Countries That Gave Women the Right to Vote After Egypt
We, too, were surprised.
On this day 64 years ago, Egyptian women were granted suffrage. The right to vote was given after years of feminist efforts, spearheaded by heroes like Huda Sha’arawi, the founder of the Egyptian Feminist Union. Because of brave souls like hers and the fight they put up, Egypt was able to take a positive step in 1956 towards equality before many of our neighbours and some of the world’s biggest nations. In appreciation of the work Egyptian women have done for this generation, and are yet to do, we’ve compiled a list of countries that we've beat to the punch to get the vote:
1. Lebanon: 1957
2. Colombia: 1957
3. Tunisia: 1959
4. Cayman Islands: 1959
5. Cyprus: 1960
6. Bahamas: 1962
7. Algeria: 1962
8. Australia: 1962
9. Switzerland: 1971
10. Portugal: 1976
