Award-Winning Egyptian Documentary 'Lift Like a Girl' is Finally Getting Screened in Egypt

After travelling the world’s film festival circuit and picking up awards along the way, the Egyptian documentary ’Lift Like A Girl’ is finally being screened in Cairo for the first time. The film follows the story of a young weightlifter called Zebiba who trains at an academy led by former Olympian Captain Ramadan. The 14-year-old athlete hopes to follow in the footsteps of the first female Arab weightlifting Olympic medalist, Abeer Abdelrahman.

Zebiba's efforts were noticed by Alexandrian filmmaker Mayye Zayed, who made sure her story reached  the world, having since been screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, DOC NYC, and DOK Leipzig, the last of which is the world’s oldest documentary festival, where ‘Lift Like a Girl’ won the prestigious Golden Dove award in the German competition.

The film has now finally made its way to Cairo, where it will be shown at the Cairo International Film Festival on December 6th, at the main hall of the Cairo Opera House.
