Egyptian footballers continue their invasion of European football leagues with Aly Ghazal making history as the first Egyptian footballer to captain a European team.

Joining the Nacional da Madeira footballing club in 2013, coach Manuel Machado decided to hand the Egyptian footballer the captain armband in hopes of leading the Portuguese club to the top of league.

The towering 24-year-old football sensation began his career with Egyptian club Al-Sekka Al-Hadid before moving to Wadi Degla in 2006 where he captained the team before booking a spot on the Portuguese club. “Thank God I’ve been picked as captain of Nacional da Madeira, it’s undoubtedly something that’ll add to my responsibilities towards the team,” he tells Youm7 adding, “I will strive to lead the team to finish in a high position in the Portuguese Liga this season.”

The road to the top will be a difficult one, as last year Ghazal managed to help the team avoid relegation closing out last season in the 11th spot in the Portuguese Liga. Despite his versatile play as a central defender, Ghazal is rarely called up for the Egyptian national team, although he managed to make three appearances during Bob Bradley's tenure as the national team’s coach.
