Mortada Mansour Sentenced to One Year in Jail

Finally deciding to put loud mouth Mortada Mansour in his rightful place, a Cairo misdemeanor court sentenced the despised Zamalek Football Club Chairman to one year in prison and a 10,000LE fine for insulting a lawyer Tarek El-Awady on a television show.

It’s no secret in Egyptian society that Mortada Mansour is a controversial figure, often insulting and threatening anyone he dislikes, including Zamalak football club fans. Finally being held accountable for his outlandish statements, Mansour was sentenced for comments made during a television appearance in August 2014.

At the time, Mansour faced off on air with lawyer Tarek El-Awady about clashes that occurred between Ultras White Knight (UWK), Zamalek's hardcore fan base, and security forces. Attacking a group of lawyers Mansour tells the TV host “You know a secret? I have hit [Lawyer Al-Awady] twice with my shoe in the High court.”

The clashes discussed were the result of an illegal protest by the UWK, who were condemning the arrest of at least 13 of their colleagues, charged for attempting to assassinate Mansour. Adding even more fuel to the fire, Mortada Mansour has repeatedly called on the Interior Ministry to designate the UWK as a “terrorist group/”

As it stands the verdict can be appealed, and bail has been set at a measly LE1000.
