Al-Matariya Hospital Closed Down After Police Officers Assault Two Doctors

The Doctors Syndicate shut down Al-Matariya Hospital following an incident where two doctors were assaulted by a gang of police officers. The incident followed a request by a junior officer in civilian clothes that arrived at the hospital requesting a fake medical report with other injuries that he didn't have. After the doctor treating him refused, he called a gang of his colleagues who then proceeded to assault the doctor and his colleague.

The two doctors, Ahmed Mahmoud and Moemen Abdel Azeem, filed complaints against the officer and his colleagues. According to Al-Ahram, the doctors were later pressured to withdraw their complaints after being told that the policemen filed complaints against them. The policemen used reports from a motorcycle injury to file the complaints, claiming that they were a result of the assault on them by the doctors. The syndicate is appealing these reports citing them as “fraudulent” and asking the Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar to take immediate action to suspend and discipline the policemen.

The hospital will remain closed until the policemen are arrested and trialled, said the syndicate's secretary, Ehab El-Taher to Al-Ahram Online. The syndicate also threatened that all escalatory measures are available, including a partial strike to protect the dignity of doctors.
