Famed Egyptian Child Actress Fayrouz Dies at Age 73

With a thriving career in the 1950s, Armenian-Egyptian actress Perouz Artin Kalfayan’s (also known as Fayrouz) life sadly came to an end on Saturday at the age of 73, according to Al Ahram. Born on 15th March 1943, she was known as the ‘the child prodigy’, often called the 'Shirley Temple of Egypt', starring in more than ten movies. In previous years, she was reported to have suffered liver and kidney problems before her passing, leaving behind a son and daughter.

Discovered at the age of seven by Anwar Wagdy, a director and producer, Fayrouz starred in the movie Yasmine in 1950 alongside him. The multi-talented child star excelled at singing, acting and dancing, appearing in numerous films, though her role in Dahab was one of her biggest. After marrying the fairly known Egyptian comedian Badreddine Gamgoum in 1959, she ended her career. Although her career only lasted for about a decade, Egyptians from different generations will always remember her, as many of her songs are still used in the cinema nowadays. Fayrouz was honoured in 2001 by the Cairo International Film Festival, for her great achievements during her career.
