Lonely Planet Ranks Egypt & Oman Amongst Top 10 Destinations for 2022

With the world gradually reopening throughout 2021, following an unprecedented distribution of vaccines to combat a raging pandemic, it is perhaps safe to say that Lonely Planet’s annual selection of the most coveted travel destinations is more highly anticipated than usual this year. Travellers are ready to reconnect with the world, and they’re looking at the renowned travel guide’s list of 30 must-see destinations for guidance. Among the top 10 destinations is Egypt, which has made the cut at 10th place.

Although Egypt is often thought of as a quintessential tourist destination, it’s only recently that it is once more being seen as a realistic and desirable option for travellers around the globe. Over the past few years, its tourism sector has been gradually recovering after major societal shifts as well as the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s only now that this recovery has made something of a breakthrough, in spite of the challenges that Egypt faced - a reflection of the efforts made to modernise and galvanise the nation.

Egypt made headlines earlier this April when the opening of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation was accompanied by the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade, showcasing Egypt’s most accomplished designers, musicians and dancers in a dramatic, large-scale performance. With that startling reminder of Egyptian heritage and talent, all eyes are on the opening of the highly-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum near the Great Pyramids of Giza, with much attention being spent on the nation’s coastal resorts, desert retreats, burgeoning nightlife, and of course its ancient tombs and temples scattered along the Nile.

The complete Top 10 list includes Malawi, Nepal, Slovenia, Belize, Mauritius, and Norway, with the Cook Islands taking the number one spot, and Oman being the only other nation to represent the Middle East at 7th place.
