Egypt Listed as One of the World’s Top Two Diving Spots

With more than 1,800 miles of coastline hugging the Mediterranean and Red seas, Egypt is home to a dazzling bounty of vibrant underwater attractions that continue to draw in curious divers and snorkelers from around the world, year after year.

For Diving Magazine UK, there’s never been a better time to strap on a dive tank and immerse yourself in the kaleidoscopic waters of Egypt, placing it at number two in its annual roundup of the world’s best diving hotspots for the third year in a row.

For decades, Egypt has topped scuba diving destination lists thanks to its easily accessible and relatively inexpensive seaside resorts and its well-established diving hubs clustered along the country’s stretch of the Red Sea. Perfecting the art of resort-based tourism, Egypt has a myriad of diving hubs that cater for novices and pros alike.

Lauded for its incredible biodiversity, unrivaled visibility and staunch resilience of its coral reefs in the face of climate change, the Red Sea continues to be one of the world’s most popular diving destinations. Its clear waters—a product of increased salinity due to high evaporation over the desert—are teeming with more than 1,200 species of fish and more than 200 species of coral. Couple that with year-round sunshine and you have the perfect recipe for an immersive diving experience.

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt’s most popular resort town in South Sinai, is known for its massive sprawl of resorts lining its coastline, offering travelers all-inclusive diving experiences. For divers looking for something a bit more low-key, the nearby backpacker-friendly town of Dahab is just 100km north of Sharm and is resplendent with bohemian diving spots. Away from the crowds of South Sinai and off the western shore of the Red Sea, Marsa Alam is quickly becoming a diving hotspot, too, with its unspoiled sites and pristine reefs, adding to the rich of sea-side diving havens, giving curious travelers a glimpse into the country’s vast variety of ecological habitats and marine species.
