On the eastern shores of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Aqaba, unassuming wooden huts dot the coastal town of Nuweiba. Egyptians and tourists alike come here for a pilgrimage of self-care, tapping into the mystical energies of its soaring pale mountains. One of Egypts oldest specialised yoga studios, ‘On the Mat’, is celebrating their 10th anniversary with a four-day retreat at Aqua Sun, a remote escape amidst the untamed wilderness of Nuweiba. Running from October 6th to October 9th, ‘Finding Freedom in Self-Expression’ invites camp-goers to a series of beachside yoga sessions, while giving them the opportunity to explore Nuweiba’s natural splendour.

“The choice for Nuweiba was driven by the powerful calming energies there,” Gihan Saiid, founder of ‘On the Mat’, tells SceneTraveller. “We chose Aqua Sun because they are equipped with all the tools needed for a peaceful and organised yoga retreat. They have an indoor yoga shala with air conditioning, and amazing open spaces by the sea to host meditations and sunset yoga sessions.”

Trained in Baptiste Power Vinyasa in Kenya and with over 1000 hours of teaching experience in various cities across the globe, seasoned yoga instructor Dr. Omniya el Baghdadi was chosen to lead the retreat. Baghdadi expertly combines creative sequences, a spirit of playfulness and a dose of inspiration in her practices to help people find their power, strength and voice.

The retreat is open to all levels, from beginners to experienced yoga practitioners. The programme features bonfires on the beach, a slow-cooked meal at Castle Zaman in Taba, and a hiking trip to Wadi El Weshwash, a stretch of mountains known for its pure water springs.

Booking costs for this retreat start from EGP 4500 (or about $285) for a hut, and up to EGP 6000 (or about $380) for a single room. Registration is available through https://www.onthematstudio.info/freedom-in-expression.

All visitors entering Egypt, including nationals, must be in possession of a negative PCR test taken at a maximum of 72 hours before their flights.
