At first thought, the realms of food and fashion seem lightyears apart. No one thinks "high fashion" when they watch Cake Wars. But apparently someone did and brought us this deliciously regal photoshoot has merges food and fashion drawing inspiration from last Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, and – wait for it – cake. Titled The Royal Life of a Modern Marie Antoinette and The Fairy-Tale Cakes, the shoot saw some of the biggest names in local fashion team up with Cake Café in continuing to creatively fuse past and present.

It makes perfect sense – the 19th century icon that lived and breathed the lavish lifestyle of the Court of Versailles. So pompous and indulgent, she allegedly responded to being told that peasants had no bread with the infamous, “Let them eat cake.”

The photo shoot captures modernised royalty, enriched with cake designs that incorporate decorative icing, sparkling crystals and romantic floral creations as an ode for her love of cake. The art of cake design takes masterful craftsmanship, just as Antoinette would demand of her chefs if she were alive today. In which case, she would hire Kesmat El Mehelmy of the renowned Cake Café. Mehelmy executes the craft perfectly in the saccharine selection of cakes from the shoot. They truly show what artistry, candied aesthetic and exquisite sugar work can create.

Just in time for this fall and upcoming winter fashion season, Antoinette’s signature taste of vibrant pastels and vintage metallic fits right in to the decadency that comes with the holiday spirit. It takes on a modern spin on Baroque and Rococo styles, using references to the 19th century fashion in the form of classic fitted silhouettes with intricate embroidery and lavish fabrics such as lace, brocade and organza. The collaboration includes the likes of couture designer Malak El Ezzawy, diamond jeweler Cherif El Sirgany, Halo Headpieces, and Suki Designs handbags.
