The 13 Coolest Things to Do in Cairo This Weekend
From concerts in Zamalek and ballet at the Opera, to long night raves all over the country and even special getaways to the outskirts of town; there’s so much to do this weekend! Here’s your recap:
There’s a long weekend on the horizon, and word on the street is that this Sunday is also off. Whaaaat! Two long weekends in a row? Too good to be true, it seems. That's why you should get vigorously ready for the mania that is about to unfold, and nobody wants to be THAT person who stays at home on a day off! Whether you’re into artsy stuff, parties, hikes, music, or reading about artsy stuff, parties, hikes, and music, here’s a guide to everything cool happening this week that we expect you to study by heart:
Friday 30/09
Funkin' and Poppin' @ Royal Club Mohamed Ali
Nacelle are BACK with Funk N Pop, and the lineup is totally insane! Hashem, Marc Wahba, Nell Edwards, Reggang, Safi, and Sahara, will all be putting together the craziest tunes as you're welcomed back to all-day raves on the green fields of Royal Club Mohamed Ali. This is where you go if you want chill daytime vibes, mellow beats, and you secretly want to dress like you just came out of Woodstock. It's also the perfect spot if, you know, like us, you get a little hungry when you party because the party is brimming with local food stands. And people hula hooping like their lives depend on it.
Time: 1:00pm - 9:00pm
Reservations: 02-33450228
If your favourite time of the day is food time, we doubt you would mind spending your Friday at Westown Hub's yummy Food Market with a wide variety of exhibitors and food-related activities! The live entertainment will be moving you around in case the calories are too much for you. Yalla, go omnomnomn and bring the kiddos and the cousins and the friends and the family. This day-long event is basically a giant family picnic.
Time: 12:00pm - 10:00pm
Being one of the most beautiful parts of Egypt, Heliopolis should be given the respect of exploration, and this might just be the perfect opportunity to do so! As if sketching while standing still wasn't difficult enough, this exploratory sketching walk will be introducing you to some of the important heritage buildings in Heliopolis. And there are plenty, so put on some comfy shoes and get to know some of the cities artistically inclined as you explore. More details here.
Time: 8:30am - 11:30am
CairoComix 2 @ AUC Tahrir Campus
Get geeky! But don't feel guilty because everyone else will be even more geeky than you. Coming back bigger and more advanced, artists will be telling their stories and showing you how to tell a story! Over 30 artists will be participating, and there'll be a whole list of exhibitors, publishers, experts, and surely, you! Walk around The GrEEK campus and possibly relive the geeky college days as you get to know other equally geeky people. This is also going on all weekend, so you can always come back all three days – depends where you stand on the geek-o-metre.
Time: 11:00am - 10:00pm
Reservations: 02-27942964
Shnit Pre-party @ Old French Institute
Some Shnit's about to blow! Warming up for the artistic mania ahead of the coolest short film festival to hit Cairo since, well, we're not sure, Shnit's Cairo incarnation (the festival is originally Swiss) seems to be giving us one more reason to party! But it’s the weekend anyway so we don’t think you want to be THAT person who stays at home on a Friday night. Eclectic choice of space at the Old French Consulat with a slew of some of Cairo's best up and coming spinners. Local talent and lots of booze.

Yehia Khalil @ Cairo Opera House
Yehia Khalil may look at first like your average Santa, but in reality, he's so much more, and he's got a big bag of talent and tunes to hand over whether you've been bad or not! Trust us on this one. The man is essentially the Omar Khairat of jazz, and he's phenomenal. If you're looking to keep it classy and appreciate some good music, he's your man. Also, pro tip: this is a great date idea.
Time: 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Reservations: 02-27390188
Fairouz T / Special K @ Cairo Jazz Club
The female sensation of the melodic vocal deep house sets of Fairouz T (and the fact that ladies DJing is the best thing ever) will unleash magic behind the CJC decks, followed by the trademark tech house sets of Special K that will take over for the rest of the night.
Time: 10:00pm - 3:00am
Reservations: 02-33459939
Saturday 1/10
Fathy Salama @ Cairo Opera House
The new project of this brilliantly talented Egyptian musician is to break, for the first time, from the tendency to use Arabic music solely as a bank for samples to serve the purposes of electronic music. What does this even mean? We do not know, what we do know is he has a scruffy beard and he won a Grammy. So if you want to experience some hardcore Egyptian talent (other than Amr Diab of course) with one of the country's most renowned composers, this is the event for you.
Time: 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Reservations: 02-27390188

Day Use @ Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski
Thought you'd never be royal? Think again. Take some time off and head over to New Cairo, because pool parties can be done elegantly at Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski! This is probably as close as you'll get to being a pampered Hollywood star for a day – pop by, go for an elegant swim (because that's a thing), dry off, sip a cocktail, speak in a British accent. You know what, book an overnight stay and sleep in on Sunday because it's a holiday!
Start time: 11/09/2016
End time: 15/10/2016

Sunday 2/10
There's something about the idea of brunch that makes us think mimosas and fancy sun hats, summer dresses and pearl necklaces. Then we remember we're in Egypt. Right. You'll probably be told to 3eesh 3eeshet ahlak, but it's the long weekend so you should fancy yourself up on a Sunday morning and head to Mirage Café.
Time: Every Sunday noon till the end of the year!
Reservations: 02-24115588
Prices: 230 LE
Andromida @ El Sawy Culturewheel
You can't simply just say "Andromida". It's "ANDROMIDAAA"! They're the oldest rock band in Egypt, who were formed in Alexandra back in 1988 and went on to win the 1st prize in Marlboro Rock 1994, along with playing iconic music by Pink Floyd. \m/
Time: 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Reservations: Tickets on door
Long weekends are always reason to celebrate around here – alwyas. Now is the perfect time for you to unwind and have a good rub! You'll be whisked away from the comfort of your home in a limo (you read that right), and then you'll be getting massaged till your limbs go numb at the Four Season's most comforting spa. You'll be taken back home again in the limo, and basically given the royal treatment. Limos, a long weekend, and a massage, could you seriously ask for more?
