Tūla: Cairo’s Newest Yoga Studio

Have you ever seen Cairo at sunrise? No, seriously, have you ever taken a drive or a walk down any part of Cairo as the sun comes up over streets so empty and serene that we practically expect to see a few tumbleweeds rolling? Blissful, isn't it? Now imagine that exact feeling after coming home from a long day's work and sitting in senseless traffic. Gentlemen, you can keep imagining all you want - but, ladies, Tūla in Mohandiseen offers yoga classes between 5 PM - 9 PM, so that's basically like the same thing.

'Tūla' literally means to be in balance, something we're all looking for amid the chaos of everyday happenings. We could try getting our lives figured out and putting all our ducks in a row, but we'd probably just fail and wind up halfway through a tub of Häagen-Dazs without single regret. Or we could just try yoga, right? Dahlia Helmy, Founder of Tūla, stumbled into her first yoga class in 2006 and found peace - so, apparently it isn't found in ice cream. Opening up her own place in 2010, Helmy's aim is to spread the practice of yoga a bit more. “This place isn’t money-oriented; it’s more than just a yoga studio," she tells us. "I want to build a community where anyone can find support and get to learn more about different perspectives in a cozy environment.” At Tūla, you won’t only find others also seeking that sense of peace, but you also have a chance to relax and unwind after a long day of Cairo’s traffic.

One of the yoga instructors, Hannah Cooper, believes that teachers are also students; everyone continues to learn, the process is never ending. Tūla provides a supportive space for others to learn in an entertaining way, where people can experiment and gain more than what they came in for. This experience will make you as happy as you might feel after discovering that you got a free sundae after ordering McDonald’s, minus the extra calories.

For all the gents reading this, Tūla will be open for men as well during the weekends! Not only that, but new workshops will also be introduced by January.
