Egypt to Provide Free Nutritional Meals to Schoolkids

Starting with the 2021/2022 school year, Egypt will provide free nutritional meals to students. Eight billion pounds are allocated for school meals annually, with each of these meals costing the government EGP 15.

This announcement came during the inauguration of the new industrial food complex ‘Silo Foods’ in Sadat City in the Menoufia Governorate. Established by the National Service Products Organization, Silo Foods is the first and only fully-integrated food production complex in the region, with a focus on producing affordable and healthy meals for school children.

According to the Minister of Education and Technical Education Tarek Shawky, approximately eight million Egyptian children suffer from anemia due to a lack of nutritious food. These meals will be customized to meet the needs of children facing anemia or who suffer from stunt growth issues.
