Egypt Receives First Monorail Train of New Transport Fleet

Egypt has received its first monorail train, the first of a fleet to stretch from Cairo’s Nasr City to the New Administrative Capital. The project - which spans 56 kilometres, stopping at 21 stations - is set to begin its first phase operations in May 2022.

Currently, two monorail rapid transit systems are being constructed in total. The other route connects 6th of October City to Downtown Cairo’s Arab League headquarters over 42 kilometres, and is expected to operate by June 2023.

As the 80 km/ hour monorail projects pick up pace, it’s worth recounting that both routes will be connected to Cairo’s Metro Line 3, designed to serve as the first integrated public transport system connecting communities from 6th of October City to the New Administrative Capital.

Operating silently, the monorail will utilise 70 fully automated, driverless Bombardier INNOVIA Monorail 300 trains, each carrying four carriages. Made of extruded aluminum panels, the trains will be corrosion-resistant and recyclable, leaving no trace of pollution.
