EgyTruck Initiative Invites Youth to Start Their Own Food Truck Hustle

The Ministry of Local Development teamed up with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to launch the ‘EgyTruck’ initiative, tackling Egypt’s youth unemployment rate while capitalizing on our ever-indefatigable love for fast food. Try to fatigue it. See? You can’t.

The joint project will provide 900 mobile food trucks to youth aged 18 to 40 across eight Egyptian governorates - Qalyubia, Sharkia, Dakahlia, Minya, Assiut, Sohag, Alexandria, and Port Said - to help them start their own businesses.

These 900 food trucks are only the starting point, and are estimated to generate more than 5000 job opportunities. The ministries are tasked with facilitating all procedures, and overseeing the technical and financial aspects of opening up mobile food businesses. Leveraging the power of social media to attract more youth, the initiative has its own Facebook page to receive requests for those interested in getting their hands on one of the trucks. Licenses for these vehicles will be issued in less than a week following confirmation of the vehicle. 

Normally, licenses for food carts in Egypt range anywhere between EGP 5,000 and EGP 20,000—a number that discourages a lot of young people from trying their hand at the often lucrative venture. This initiative is working to help circumvent that. The initiative isn’t just blindly giving out free trucks, though. It will also offer training courses for the people behind the selected projects that will help acquaint them with the laws and requirements behind mobile food units and how to manage their businesses properly.
