EGP 969 Million Invested to Protect Alexandria's Beaches

The General Authority for the Protection of Beaches is implementing several major projects to protect the coasts of Alexandria from climate change, and stop the effects of severe erosion on shrinking shorelines. The projects are estimated to cost around EGP 969 million in total.

The areas in question are the corniche area in front of El Mahrousa Hotel, at a cost of EGP 335 million, and Abu Qir Bay, at an estimated cost of EGP 67 million. A 500-metre-long project is currently underway to strengthen and protect the corniche from Mansheya to Raml Station, at a cost of EGP 100 million.

The project is launched in parallel with other climate change projects, such as the Bahr El-Baqar wastewater treatment plant that was recently inaugurated. The plant holds two Guinness World Records - one for being the largest wastewater treatment plant, and another for being the largest sludge treatment plant - and is hoped to reclaim 400,000 feddans of farmland in North Sinai.
