7 Tips for Vegans in Cairo

Vegans were once a rare species in Egypt probably because, to a committed carnivore, adopting a vegan diet - no meat, no fish, no dairy, no eggs - sounds like a dramatic step. We mean, how can one go vegan when things like the Big Tasty exist? But thanks to places like The Vegan Kitchen, InSeason, Sattva Steps and more, people are becoming more health-conscious. Problem is, it's hard to find the ingredients for your perfect vegan dish, and that's where we come in for the rescue.

1) Tofu (Soy-based meat substitute)

Available to order from Gaya Restaurant in Maadi (Tel: 02 2519 7769)

2) Coconut/Soy/Almond Milk

Available at most Total (gas station) Shop and Seoudi Markets.

3) Vegan Mayonnaise

Put 1/2 cup soy milk (see above), 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, 1 teaspoon ground mustard, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar and a cup of Canola oil (available at Seoudi Market) in a blender and blend slowly until the mayonnaise is thick and creamy. Voila.

4) Quinoa

Available at Nun Center's farmer market and Gourmet supermarkets.

5) Seitan (Wheat-based meat substitute)

All ingredients can be found in Seoudi Market and Dina Farm's Supermarket.

6) Tempeh (Soy-based chicken substitute)

All ingredients can be found at Alpha Market's Asian section (Tel: 19299)

7) Vegan Cheese

Available at Health Harvest Shop
