#SceneExclusive: On the Road with Egypt’s First Mainland Hiking Route Through the Red Sea Mountains

Following the runaway success and global acclaim of award-winning tourism project, The Sinai Trail, the good folks behind the most unique hiking experience in Egypt have launched The Red Sea Mountain Trail (RSMT). In this exclusive insight into the 10-day, 170km hiking adventure, CairoScene goes deep into the heart of the Red Sea Mountains and the lesser beaten paths of Hurghada.

Launched by British geographer, Ben Hoffler, with the help of Egyptian mountaineer and adventurer, Omar Samra, RSMT is operated by Bedouins native to the area, the Maaza Tribe, and aims to boost tourism by shining a light on one of the more uncharted areas of Egypt and showing the true variety and eclectic nature of Egypt as a tourist destination.

As the first long-distance trail of its kind on mainland Egypt, the trip takes hikers on ancient travel, trade and hunting routes, where desert landscapes, deep gorges, high summits, Roman settlements and prehistoric rock art make for a unique backdrop.

With easier alternatives to many of the different sections of the route available, the trail is also anchored by six hiking hubs, each of which encompasses several other hiking routes that focus on a particular area, such as Jebel Shayib and Um Anab. It all makes for a combined 600km network of trails that will keep even the heartiest of hikers busy for well over a month. Prices vary depending on your choice of accommodation and the route you choose to take, but on average, this most unique of alternative travel will cost you at least EGP 1,8000.
