Maha Designs Embraces Freehand Art with Bold Falahi Patterns and Picasso Prints

With artistic inspiration at its core, Maha Designs is a brand that combines the work of world-class artists, architecture and Falahi culture into its collections. The brand launched in August earlier this year when sisters Maha and Farah Mohamed chose to leave their jobs because of the Coronavirus, and instead, pursue something that puts their talent to use. Both sisters have a background in visual and fine arts at university level, with Farah designing the clothes' illustrations using freehand, resulting in pieces that are unique to the brand and its identity.

“In our design process, we seek inspiration from everyone from Frida Kahlo, Picasso and Van Gogh, to traditional Egyptian folk art, namely, Falahi art,” Maha tells CairoScene. “It’s really important for us that our brand celebrates art, and maintains its unique identity through that. We look towards internal, external and particularly Nubian culture for inspiration. We tend to stray away from trends, and tend to our own thing instead.”

The sisters plan on expanding soon, intent on creating new jackets, blouses and skirts in their pursuit of fashion and artistic innovation.
