Daa Rum Handpaints Grungy Alternative Art On Their Tote Bags

Young digital arts and design graduate Muraad Ibrahim has imported what was once a New York-based tote bag business into Egypt’s capital. Intermingling 90s grunge, his love for Andy Warhol, and a little bit of indie-rock, Daa Rum (Muraad’s name spelled backwards) is a result of the artists’ evolving journey that he hopes to express through fashion.

"I used to live in New York, where tote bags are very popular, and I started to draw on them and wear them out," Ibrahim tells #CairoScene. "People liked them, so I started selling them there, but when Corona happened I moved to Cairo and brought back the idea with me.” The young designer and artist has since taken it upon himself to learn the art of fashion design, recently completing a course just weeks ago. “Right now I buy fabric and use a tailor to make the bags before I paint on them, but I’ve got plans to learn how to do it myself and hopefully start making clothing as well.”

In the future, the artist hopes to venture into different attire and kinds of art as well. While his designs are heavily illustration-based at the moment, he has plans to create what he calls ‘full-on paintings’ on clothing.
