Celebrating Feminine Delicacy with Laien Jewellery

With bold colours and subtle shapes, Laien is the jewellery brand helping us hit the refresh button on our wardrobes. Founder Farida El Bakry had been making jewellery for 11 years; after dabbling with abalone, the Mother of Pearl, she found her voice in nature and became inspired by the ocean. Laien in Arabic means soft, and that's what the brand perfectly emulates; the effortless wonders of nature and delicate feminine power.

"There were all these standalone studs and pendants and I remember sitting on the dining table," El Bakry tells @SceneStyled. "With all the work and materials spread in front of me, I looked down and saw a pearl stud go into an abalone pendant." The coincidence and perfect timing became the Houriya Earrings, Laien's best sellers for the following three years.

What has Laien standing out from the crowd is its ability to be effortless and versatile. "You can wear a piece to a brunch, then you can add to it and wear it to a wedding," explains El Bakry. "To me, nature should not be messed with, but celebrated in and by itself for the wonder that it is without too much noise."

Her favourite pieces include the Gold-Plated pendant, which is sold for EGP 1,650. Meanwhile the Houriya Earrings, which is where it all started, goes for EGP 1,250. To shop these pieces yourself, you can DM them through their Instagram page at @laien_official.
