Egyptian Film 'Yomeddine' Chosen for Melbourne International Film Festival

Egyptian film Yomeddine has been selected to take part in the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) today, August 12, according to Egypt Today. The annual festival, one of the oldest in the world, features movies from all corners of the globe, bringing diversity and culture together under one roof.

The heart-warming comedy, directed by Egyptian-Austrian filmmaker, Abu Bakr Al Shawky, tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a leper and a young orphan, as they head out on a road-trip of sorts, in search of family.

The film has been largely received well, including at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, where the film had its world premier and became the first from Egypt to compete for Palm d’Or award. Shawky was also nominated for the Camera d’Or, an award given to the best first-time director at the festival.

Other Egyptian movies that have previously featured at the Melbourne International Film Festival include The Night of Counting the Years (1969) and Sheikh Jackson (2017).
