Egyptian Athletes Win Gold at Para Powerlifting African Championships

For the Algiers 2018 World Para Powerlifting African Championships, Egyptian powerlifters Sherif Osman and Fatma Omar have achieved two gold medals respectively for Egypt.

Osman was reportedly impressive in his performance, securing the bar at 206 kg. Fatma Omar was striking with her 135 kg lift, earning Egypt’s second gold medal on the second day of the event.

This isn’t the first time either powerlifter has earned a medal; Osman won a gold medal in the Rio 2016 Summer Paralympics, and Omar was also a victor in the Summer Paralympics of 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012.

“Sherif Osman is like wine: he improves as he gets older,” World Para Powerlifting wrote on their website.

Osman is working his way towards earning the qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. “[I want to] break my own world record gain one more time,” Osman said in a statement to Para Powerlifting.

Osman broke world record, holding the 211 kg cup. Omar, on the other hand, tried to break Chinese weightlifter Yujiao Ta’s 138.5 kg record; however, she got away with securing a 135 kg lift.
