Nadine Labaki Announced As President of Cannes’ ‘Un Certain Regard’ Jury

One week after Nadine Labaki landed in Cairo to attend the Egyptian premiere of her acclaimed drama, Capernaum, the award-winning filmmaker has been announced as the new president of Cannes’s Un Certain Regard jury.

Previously held by Oscar-winning actor, Benicio Del Toro, the role will see Labaki head a section which focuses on films with 'various visions and styles'. The Un Certain Regard award (which translates to “from another point of view”) was first introduced to the festival in 1998 to recognise young talent and encourage daring work.

The announcement by Cannes said that there are few better choices than Labaki, as each one of her three feature films, ‘Caramel’, ‘Where Do We Go Now?’ and ‘Capernaum’ have premiered and found fame at the festival, with the latter winning the jury prize in 2018.
