Egypt Announces Massive Monorail Project Interconnecting Alexandria

Egypt's Transportation Ministry has signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with Egyptian construction company, Redcon, to kick-off operations on a massive monorail project that's set to transform commuting at Egypt's second biggest city, Alexandria. The project will be executed in cooperation with three unnamed 'specialised international companies', as reported by Masrawy.

The first line of the project will connect the area near Carrefour on Alexandria's outskirts with the central Raml Station in Downtown Alexandria, while the second will connect El Mawqef El Gedid, the city's busiest bus station, with Carrefour. The third and longest line will cross through the entire city, connecting Ras Al Tin with Al Montazah.

Upon completion, the monorail is said will host a capacity of 10,000-15,000 passengers per hour, as revealed by Alexandrian MP Mohamed Farag Amer, and will help alleviate pressure off of the often sardine-packed streets of the city. The timeline of the project hasn't yet been announced, however MP Amer said that a long-term plan that will extend the monorail to the adjacent Borg El Arab city is also being considered.
