Egypt’s Fastest Female Swimmer Farida Osman Breaks Record in Mediterranean Games

Just this Sunday, Farida Osman—recognized as both Egypt and Africa’s fastest female swimmer—won her second medal for the Mediterranean Games taking place in Tarragona, Spain. She single-handedly took first place in the 50m Butterfly Swimming, and broke the Mediterranean Games' record at 25.48 seconds. The first medal was a Silver Medal awarded for the 100m Butterfly Swimming, which she completed at 58.51 seconds on Saturday.

Out of the nine other Egyptian swimmers participating in the events, Osman is the only female; Marwan El-Kamash also achieved a Bronze Medal on the second day of the competition, competing in the 200m Freestyle Swimming. 

But the good news doesn’t just stop there. Out of the 170 Egyptian athletes participating in different sports, Egypt has been awarded more than five medals on each of the first two days of the competition so far.

Osman is internationally recognized as a record-holder, given her history of triumphs in a number of competitions in the world of swimming. She has previously won medals in the All-Africa Games, as well as previous editions of the Mediterranean Games, and was named Best African Female Athlete for the 2017 ANOC Awards in Prague.

The Mediterranean Games, which take place every four years, started on Friday June 22 and will be running until July 1. Osman has one more medal to compete for on Monday for the 40m Freestyle Swimming.
