Egypt Has ‘World’s Cheapest Taxi Fares’

While more and more Egyptians have come to rely on the likes of Uber and Careem for their daily movements, the often chastised ‘white taxis’ are emerging as a more practical option for tourists and visitors, according to data gathered by Taxi2Airport.com.

Using figures from Taxi-Calculator.com, calculations show Egypt to have the cheapest average fare, based on a 5km journey, which in Om El Donia apparently costs 0.84 euros – EGP 15.75 at the time of writing. This perceived cheapness is, of course, down to the exchange rate, rendering this piece of news quite insignificant in the grand scheme of things – but let’s take a look at some of the other countries on the list. Just for funsies.

Egypt is followed by India (1.29 euros), Thailand (1.41 euros) and Indonesia (1.68 euros), while the most expensive fares are to be found, quite predictably, in Europe, with Switzerland topping the table as the most expensive at a whopping 22.68 euros, though Japan has sneaked in at second place with a 5km journey in the Land of the Rising Sun averaging at 15.64 euros.
