Egypt Dominates African Youth Games with Highest Number of Gold Medals

With the African Youth Games nearing to a close in Algeria, Egypt is slaying in multiple categories right and left, bagging several gold medals in the process. So far in the event, which is running from July 19 to July 28, Egypt has won a total of 110 medals, 61 of which are gold, putting us in the lead of the medals table.

Some of the highlights include a remarkable run by the Egyptian women's volleyball team that culminated in a defeat of Cameroon in the final, while the men’s team went home with a silver medal after a 3-2 fonal defeat to Nigeria.

Earlier this week, Taekwondoka, Abdel Rahman Khalaf, received a gold medal and Ismail Helal got three of his own in weightlifting, while Youssef Abdel Aziz and Marwa Al-Hodaby (pictured) won the singles titles in table tennis and Amal Mousa won gold in the women's weightlifting.

The African Youth Games takes place in a different country every four years to complement the All-Africa Games and features thousands of young African athletes ranging between the ages of 15 and 18. Egypt’s participants in the games this year amounted to 150 players, competing in 30 out of 35 events.
