Zamalek: Egypt Cup Win for 'Gaza'

Egypt Cup winners Zamalek have dedicated their last minute victory to the 'martyrs of Gaza'. The touching tribute came following the White Knights' 1-0 victory over Smouha on Saturday. Club Chairman Mortada Mansour made the pledge during a TV interview following the game. "I dedicate the Egypt Cup to the martyrs of Gaza," Mansour told Abu Dhabi TV channel right after the game. "I just hope to see Arab leaders hold a summit to address all the carnages in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Gaza."

The win came following an 89th-minute goal from Hazem Emam, securing the club's second cup title in a row just weeks after losing the Egyptian Premier League to arch-rivals Al-Ahly. More than 400 Palestinians have died in Gaza after Israel launched air strikes, naval barrages and a ground assault on the besieged Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile Zamalek coach Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam congratulated his side last night on their cup-winning performance. "I am happy for winning the first trophy in my coaching career," Mido told reporters after the game. "I congratulate my team's players for their performance throughout the season, as well as the Egypt Cup final game," he added. "Zamalek players followed instructions and they deserve appreciation."

Mido is now widely expected to stay on as the club's manager following weeks of speculation regarding his future with the side. The coach's fate is set to be decided by the club's board on Monday.
