World's Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant Opens in Bahr El-Baqar
With two Guiness World Records under its belt, the Bahr El-Baqar Wastewater Treatment Plant will help reclaim 400,000 feddans of farmland in North Sinai with triple-treated water.
The Bahr El-Baqar Wastewater Treatment Plant has just been inaugurated in the east of Suez Canal. At a cost of approximately EGP 20 billion, the structure holds the Guinness World Record for largest wastewater treatment plant, with a production capacity of 5.6 million cubic metres per day.
More recently, it earned a second Guinness World Record for largest sludge treatment plant, due to a solar-powered sludge drying system that’s 250,000 square metres large.
The plant - which was built by Arab Contractors, Orascom Construction and the Armed Forces Engineering Authority - will be used to optimise Egypt’s water resources, and produce water that is suitable for irrigation. Its triple-treated water will be transferred to North Sinai to help reclaim 400,000 feddans of farmland.
