World's Largest Factory for Cars' Key Wire Parts to Be Built in Egypt

Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo to create a factory to create pigtail cables and wiring harnesses used in cars in 10th Ramadan City. At 150,000 sqm, not only would this be one of Sumitomo’s largest industrial complexes, it would be the largest factory for pigtail and wiring harnesses in the world.

Sumitomo currently has 10,000 employees in Egypt, and the establishment of this factory would double that headcount. With at least USD 100,000 invested in the factory by Sumitomo so far, the factory is expected to support an export boom from Egypt. The Egyptian government plans to increase the value of exports to USD 100 billion per year by 2027.

The Egyptian government is also planning on building a car factory at the Suez Canal Economic Free Zone in East Port Said. This joint venture by the Arab Organization for Industrialization, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the General Authority for SCzone, and the Egyptian International Motors is planned to produce 75,000 cars per year during its first phase.
