When Will the Grand Egyptian Museum Open?

It’s thought that it took the ancient Egyptians 20 to 30 long years to build the largest of the Great Pyramids of Giza. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has so far taken 10 years - doesn’t feel so long now, does it? Its long-delayed opening is one of the most anticipated events in Egypt since construction began in 2012, and now at the beginning of 2022 we’ve received confirmation that the GEM is 99% complete.

96% of the main exhibition halls have been completed and are currently housing more than 50,000 artifacts. The grand entrance hall, staircase and King Tutankhamun’s Hall are near completion while the structure of the Khufu Boat Museum is ready for visitors. The development of the external yards and gardens is nearly done while the museum is still working on increasing the parking capacity of vehicles to 2,000 instead of the current 1,300 car limit.

The GEM has already garnered international attention and captured the imagination of the world’s travellers - and it hasn’t even opened its doors yet. Sprawling over 117 feddans in the shadow of the Great Pyramids, the museum is the largest museum globally dedicated to only one civilization. The main spectacle will be the special exhibit dedicated to the treasures of Pharaoh Tutankhamun where visitors can feast their eyes on more than 5,000 artifacts unearthed by Howard Carter in 1922.
