Village in Fustat Fires Up First Environmentally Friendly Kiln
Most ovens used to create Egypt’s handicrafts rely on burning papers, wood, and other materials, which have a dire impact on the environment and pose safety concerns for potters. El Fawakheer, a village in El Fustat and one of Cairo’s most active pottery hubs, is due to receive new ceramic kilns from the Egyptian government. These new, self-lighting models will operate on natural gas, making them more environmentally friendly.
