Vacuum Cleaners are Replacing Brooms to Clean Up Cairo's Streets
The General Authority for Cleanliness and Beautification introduced an auxiliary vacuum cleaner to wipe dust away from the streets, replacing our charming but antiquated friend, the noble broom.
An unexpected alternative has emerged as an instrument for cleaning Cairo’s streets. In a new experiment, the General Authority for Cleanliness and Beautification introduced an auxiliary vacuum cleaner to wipe dust away from the streets, replacing our charming but antiquated friend, the noble broom.
The new tools were recently used during a cleaning campaign in Abbassia Square, and were shown to clean the streets more efficiently, while offering better protection for street sweepers’ health.
The vacuum cleaners come in two forms: one has a rolling a waste bin, and the other is carried on workers’ backs.
The Cairo Cleanliness and Beautification Authority affirmed that the experimental tools were - compared to the broom - twice as effective in clearing dust. While they do run on gasoline, they require half a litre of consumption to operate. Alternatively, they can be charged by batteries, with one charge giving them four hours of energy for dust destroying suction.
