Umm Kulthum Musical to Premiere at the London Palladium

Shortly before her death in 1975, Umm Kulthum had been invited to perform at London but fell ill before she had the chance to go. Now the capital of the United Kingdom will finally be able to hear the legendary singer's music on the 2nd of March, 2020, when a musical based on her life called 'Umm Kulthum and the Golden Era' will light up West End at the London Palladium!

Produced and written by one of Saudi Arabia's first female theatre producers, Mona Khashoggi, the one-night performance will star Syrian opera singer Lubana Al Quntar in the titular role with Umm Kulthum's great grand-niece Sanaa Nabil joining in the production. The story is based on Umm Kulthum's youth, when her transformative career was just getting started.

"As a woman, Umm Kulthum inspires women to excel. You are talking about someone who, a hundred years ago, came from a simple village and became a legend," Khashoggi said. "Her songs mean a lot to us, and her words and way of singing are full of emotion."

While Umm Kulthum and the Golden Era will grace the West End for a single evening, Khashoggi has hopes that her show will go on tour around the world so that Western audiences can get exposed to a powerful, enduring figure in Egyptian and Arab culture. Here's to alf leela weh leela of performances.
