UAE Launches Guide to Foster Smoke-Free Workplaces

The Ministry of Health and Prevention has recently introduced a comprehensive guide aimed at assisting managers and staff in establishing and maintaining smoke-free workplaces. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public health and reduce the prevalence of smoking in both government and private sectors.

The newly launched handbook, developed by the National Tobacco Control Programme, provides detailed instructions on several critical aspects. It offers guidance on creating a workplace free from tobacco use, including the implementation of clear policies and designated non-smoking areas. Additionally, the guide outlines step-by-step procedures for addressing violations of the smoke-free policies, ensuring that rules are enforced consistently and fairly. Furthermore, it includes resources and support systems to aid employees in their journey to quit smoking, such as counseling services and access to cessation programs.

Beyond practical instructions, the guide emphasizes the detrimental effects of smoking on individual health and the environment, aimed at raising awareness among employees. It also highlights the immediate and long-term benefits of quitting smoking, encouraging employees to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

This initiative is underpinned by the UAE's federal law no. 15 of 2009 on combating tobacco, which includes comprehensive executive regulations. These regulations govern all tobacco-related activities and impose strict bans on smoking in various enclosed public spaces. Specifically, the law prohibits the use of tobacco in government buildings, healthcare institutions, educational institutions, and public transport.
