Twitter Releases Egypt's Top Trends in 2019

Twitter has released their annual end of year tradition, '#ThisHappened', which reveals each country's highlights and organises them into different categories. Hashtags, events, celebrities, and top tweets are just some of the data that #ThisHappened discloses. So what exactly happened in Egypt?

The most mentioned celebrities include actor Nabil El Halfawy, Salah Abdullah, Mohamed Henedy and Ahmed Salah Hosny respectively. In 2018, Mohamed Henedy landed first in the list of most-mentioned celebrities, but in 2019 he came up top in another category. This year's top celebrity tweet was Henedy’s heart-wrenching message about the death of celebrated actor Ezzat Abou Aouf.

The year's top challenge was the #10YearsChallenge, which saw a lot of exciting submissions from actors like Hassan El Raddad, Menna Fadali and Edward Fouad.

Meanwhile, the most used emojis by Egyptians on Twitter were 'Face with tears of joy' and 'Black heart', followed by 'Blue heart'. However, the most popular event hashtag this year was the holy month of Ramadan, while the most popular entertainment hashtag of the year was Game of Thrones as it came to its (debatably) epic conclusion.

Last but not least, for the second year in a row, Al Ahly was the top trending sports team this year followed by Zamalek Club in second place, with Alexandria’s Al Ittihad coming in third. Don't worry, Zamalkawis, you'll get them next year. Not surprisingly, Egypt’s national treasure Mohamed Salah was the most tweeted footballer in 2019, with Mohamed Fathi of Al Ahly coming in second, while Zamalek’s Shikabala landed the third spot.
We almost forgot how much went down in 2019. What were some of your favourite Twitter trends this year? Let us know in the comments below.
