The Alexandria Theatre Festival Raises Its Curtains with Ten Plays From the Arab Region

The first edition of the Alexandria Theatre Festival for Specialised Institutes at the Bibliotheca Alexandria officially kicked off yesterday, and will be running until December 8th. In an attempt to encourage intercultural exchange between the nations of the region, ten plays from seven Arab countries will be showcased throughout the festival, in addition to several theatre workshops.

Last night, Egyptian stars Mai Ahmed and Ehab Fahmy hosted the opening ceremony and introduced a video honouring Egyptian stars Mohamed Sobhy, Dawood Hussain and Khaled El Nabawy. The video also highlighted Professor of Drama at the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts Dr. Hassan Attia, and President of Alexandria University Dr. Essam Ahmed El-Kurdi.

The institutes - which include those coming from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco and Oman - will participate with one play each. Ain Shams University, the American University in Cairo and the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts are set to partake as well to represent Egypt.

While all ten plays will be performed daily at 6PM in the iconic Alexandrian library, the workshops and panel discussions will be held at the nearby Beram El Tunsi Theatre. The workshops on directing, theatre writing and acting will be hosted by beloved actors Eyad Nassar, Lekaa Elkhamissi, Mohamed Sami and Ahmed Abdel Aziz.

The festival was founded by President of the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts Dr. Ashraf Zaki with the support of the Arab Theatre Institute.
