Tameem Youness' 'Salmonella' Goes Viral and Sparks Controversy

In light of @TameemYouness' newest 'Salmonella' music video going viral just a day after its release, the people of the internet have taken to social media with their opinions and are taking sides. With the music video trending on Twitter at number one and Youtube at number two in Cairo, Youness published a series of Instagram stories to address the controversy. Since the clip's release yesterday, the video has taken over our social media in reposts and has already been made into memes.

According to Youness, the catchy tunes, dance moves and lyrics are meant to troll the culture of toxic masculinity. "I expected a lot more blowback from people who say the song is against women. Because really, on the contrary, I'm making fun of young men who try to romance a woman and when he gets rejected he goes crazy, he starts insulting the woman and spreads rumours, he treats her badly and gets insecure."

Youness’ newest release, featuring local favourite performer Esseily, sparked controversy because some argue that his intentions have not come across clearly. Some suggest that the video could be misconstrued as downplaying gender-based violence and further fueling toxic masculinity, in spite of the recent awareness campaigns on a woman's right to consent.
