The Suez Canal Authority got the green light to expand
the southern end of the Suez Canal, where the Evergreen cargo ship Ever
Given was famously grounded in late March 2021, forcing a significant
portion of global trade to come to a grinding halt.
The project will widen the Canal by 40 metres to the east, and deepen it from 20 metres to approximately 22 metres. The second lane of the waterway, which opened in 2015 as part of Egypt's previous expansion of the Suez Canal, will also be extended by 10 kilometres. Overall, the project is anticipated to take 24 months to complete.
