Sokhna Gets USD 224M Data Center to Boost Egypt's Digital Vision

The establishment of the first data centre in the Sokhna Economic Zone has been approved by the Board of Directors of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The Kemet Egypt Data Center project will be located in the Sokhna Industrial Zone, covering an area of 80,000 square metres and involving a total investment of USD 224 million.

The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 will see an investment of USD 148 million  to establish 2,500 server racks of production capacity. Phase 2 will see an investment of USD 76 million for additional server rack capacity, the exact amount of which has yet to be determined.

The board of directors will participate in the project through its investment arm, the Economic Zone Investment Company.

The approval of the Kemet Egypt Data Center in the Sokhna Economic Zone is in alignment with Egypt's Vision 2030. The initiative not only supports the country's digital transformation by providing crucial infrastructure for the burgeoning digital economy but also emphasises the localization of the service sector.

By encouraging the establishment of data centres within Egypt, the project facilitates the export of services to regional and international markets, positioning the nation as a competitive player. It also aims to attract major technology companies.

The approval comes alongside the review of the board’s financial and promotional activities in the first half of the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Four more projects have been approved in the Qantara al-Gharb industrial zone. Additionally, two projects in the Qantara West area were signed with Chinese companies specialising in clothing manufacturing, dyeing and processing.
