Sir Salah is Giving a Fresh Face to the Egyptian Make-Up Scene

What started out as an artist experimenting with a new medium - his face - turned to the emergence of one of Egypt’s most popular up-and-coming make-up artists, who goes by the name Sir Salah. And not only by adding a whole lot of character to the makeup scene; he is on a mission to change Egypt’s whole worldview on make-up.

Mahmoud ‘Mammo’ Salah started developing his identity as a make-up artist in 2014, watching YouTube videos and practicing on himself and his friends. Since then, he has collaborated with brands as big as Okhtein, Blue Eyes and Radisson Blu Alexandria.

“Halloween is my favourite month of the year. It’s an opportunity to create without limits, the amount of fun I have during this month is unexplainable,” Salah told CairoScene. Every year, he posts twelve new looks during the last twelve days of the month leading up to the 31st. This year, he did it with a twist: Salah hosted a giveaway rewarding five people with a free makeover on their preferred day or occasion.

Salah also has a mini photo studio where he holds photo shoots for his clients. The very first look he posted remains among his all-time favourites: Medusa on Aya Vergora, and the broken statue look on Ahmed Qadry.

“Makeup can make you pretty or look cool on Halloween, but I also want people to see how you can start movements or send strong meaningful messages with some lipstick, an eyeshadow palette, face paint and a brush,” Salah said. “I am very conceptual and unpredictable. One day you’ll find me posting a look inspired by a famous character like Scar from Lion King or a Lana Del Rey song, another time I’ll be posting a look with themes of subjectivity and good and evil.”
