Shubra El Kheima Criminal Court Sees Historic Ruling Against FGM Case

In what is considered a landmark ruling in Egypt, Shubra El Kheima’s criminal court has sentenced two men to prison for committing an FGM (female genital mutilation) offence on a teenage girl, which caused her permanent injury. The verdict is the longest sentence ever handed out in an Egyptian court for a FGM offence.

The nurse who performed the procedure was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while the girl’s father was given a maximum sentence of three years in prison with work. Both of the men were given the option to appeal their sentences.
