Shahira Fahmy Honoured as a Woman of Outstanding Achievement in Architecture Tamayouz Awards

The 2019 edition of Women in Architecture and Construction saw renowned Egyptian architect, academic and actress Shahira Fahmy honoured as a Woman of Outstanding Achievement.

The Tamayouz Awards celebrate the achievements of female architects in the Near East and North Africa, and are split into two categories: Rising Star and Woman of Outstanding Achievement.

The winner of the Rising Star award is Saudi architect Dana AlAmri, founder of Jeddah-based WATAD Studio. The winner of the Woman of Outstanding Achievement is Turkish Dr. Zeynep Celik for her work in researching and documenting the Ottoman Era and French colonial architecture across the region.

This year, the jury of four women architects - comprised of Palestinian architects and academics Suad Al Amiry and Nadia Habash, alongside Egyptian Dr. Ebtissam Moustapha and Dr. Soheir Hawas - chose to highly commend Fahmy as a Woman of Outstanding Achievement alongside winner Celik, for her current work in affordable housing in the UK.

“Shahira Fahmy is a very talented architect whose work is diverse, authentic and clear,” the jury wrote on the official Tamayouz Awards website. “Her designs originate from the characteristics of the materials used and they are responsive to their surrounding social and natural contexts. Her work shows great attention to detail.

“In addition to architectural design, she specialises in urban and furniture design – her crossover of passions, as well as her methodology, informs her work and creates brilliant and inspiring end results. As a role model, she spreads positive influence to younger generations through her work and in the classroom, where she teaches.”

The winners and finalists will be awarded during the Tamayouz Annual Ceremony, which will be held in Jordan in December 2020.
