Sawsan Badr Named International Women's Theatre Festival Honorary President

Sawsan Badr has been selected for the role of honorary president of the Eazees International Women’s Theatre Festival (EIWTF) in its first year running. The festival, which is in honour of the late Egyptian playwright and activist Fathia El-Assal, will run from the 23rd to the 29th of March.⁣

The festival was named after Eazees (aka Isis), drawing from the myth of the Ancient Egyptian goddess' task whereupon she revived Osiris to give birth to Horus. As the festival website's explains, "Theatre is like Eazees. It collects our severed parts and gives them life, and fertilizes them with values of justice.”

Badr has contributed to Egyptian cinema and television since the 1980s, and received praise for her role in El-Shoq (2011) as well as her performance in Tariqy (2015).⁣

EIWTF is planned to take place every year with a focus on theatrical productions centred around women, and will begin with 10 Egyptian and international plays. This festival, in its exploration of women’s issues through the spotlight of the stage, is a positive step in instigating important conversations for society as a whole.
