Rooftop Gardens to be Planted Across Cairo as Part of New Citywide Initiative

Governor of Cairo, Khaled Abdel-Aal, announced in a Sunday meeting that the governorate is set to launch a new project aimed at planting gardens on rooftop across Egypt's capital. The announcement was made as Abdel-Aal met with representatives of two government-sponsored youth initiatives which aim at building sustainable communities across the country.

Abdel-Aal added that a campaign to clean up rooftops in Cairo has already started, and called upon youth from both initiatives to start reaching out to residents in their surrounding areas to communicate the message of the campaign. He explained that planting rooftops will come at no cost to Cairenes, however residents will be expected to keep up the maintenance of their rooftop gardens, and that they will also be entitled to benefit from any income such gardens may generate.

The youth representing both initiatives pledged to provide any support to ensure the full implementation of the project, which will include providing seeds and plants, moving vans, and any equipment needed to establish the gardens. The project comes as part of the governorate's plan to apply sustainable development tactics across the city and expand its green areas, concluded Abdel-Al.
