Religious Ceremonies to Be Restricted in Mosques Across Egypt Amidst Coronavirus Pandemic

Egypt's Ministry of Endowments has announced that mosques up and down the country will be restricting religious ceremonies like funeral processions and Nikkah (katb el kitab) due to growing concerns over the spread of COVID-19. Instead, mosques will only be hosting morning janazah prayers, while marriage contract ceremonies will be restricted to family members of the two to be wedded.

The main hall of all mosques will only be open during prayer times and for Friday sermons, which cannot exceed 15 minutes. People who had booked ceremonies in the events hall of any mosques are to be refunded in total, as any events booked for the coming period have been effectively cancelled. 

It was announced yesterday that all educational institutions including schools, universities, and tutoring centres will be closed for two weeks amidst the growing Coronavirus pandemic, with a budget of EGP 100 billion allocated to the cause
