Powerlifter Hany Abdelhady Wins Bronze at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

41-year-old former world champion Hany Abdelhady won a bronze medal at the -88 kg Men’s Powerlifting event at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Competition was tight as Abdelhady managed to lift 214 kg, just 2 kg more than Uzbekistan’s Farhod Umirzakov in fourth place.

Abdelhady has been a consistent force of nature at the Paralympics, having placed fourth in 2008 Beijing, winning a bronze at 2016 Rio, and taking home the gold at 2012 London. He became a world champion just over a decade ago when he lifted 235 kg at the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With this latest triumph, Abdelhady becomes Egypt’s sixth medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics thus far, all of which were earned in Powerlifting events.
