ONION EARRINGS? HOW EGYPTIAN ONIONS LED TO THIS BOLLYWOOD ACTOR’S BIZARRE GIFT

Indian writer and actress Twinkle Hanna just got a weird present from her husband, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar: a pair of onion earrings. Khanna shared a picture of them on Instagram and sounded pretty happy about it. This unusual gift has an odd Egyptian connection, and it all starts with Oum el Donia's onions.

Long story short, India hasn't been producing as many onions as they usually do. As a result, onion prices skyrocketed to compensate for the shortage. After prices rose past 100 rupees (22.8 Egyptian pounds) per kilogram, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the issue by elaborating on the government's response, saying, "Steps taken by the government to check the rising price include ban on exports, imposition of stock limit, import and transfer from surplus to deficit area." Among the countries they chose to import from are Afghanistan, Turkey and our very own Egypt. 6,090 tonnes of Egyptian onions have been contracted at the end of November.

As a result of all this drama, Indians throughout the internet have developed a sort of a meme where onions are treated like luxury items. Kumar recently visited a stand-up comedy talk show called 'The Kapil Sharma Show' to promote an upcoming film, 'Good Newwz', with co-star Kareena Kapoor. There, Kapoor was presented with a pair of onion earrings in the spirit of the meme. Although Kapoor ultimately turned her nose on them, Kumar thought his wife Khanna would take a liking to them.

On her Instagram post, Khanna praised the earrings, saying, "Sometimes it's the smallest things, the silliest things that can touch your heart." That's so sweet it brings a tear to our eyes... or maybe that's the onions.
