New Power Plant Turns Exhaust Into Energy at Giza's Abu Rawash Complex

A new power plant that will generate electricity from exhaust emissions has been inaugurated in Giza’s Abu Rawash Complex.

The tertiary power generation plant aims to reduce the area’s carbon emissions, while operating at a capacity of 27 megawatts/hour of electricity. The station will lead to a 25% reduction in fuel consumption at Abu Rawash Complex compared to traditional methods of power generation, making it that much greener. The Abu Rawash Complex is one of Egypt’s oldest and largest industrial chemical complexes, dating back to 1972. Over the past five decades, the complex has released tons of energy that hasn’t been harnessed for various reasons.

The station was designed to exploit the exhaust rather than dispose of it. As the thermal energy in the exhaust is linked between the generators, the exhaust energy becomes a source for operating the boilers, creating a cycle of green energy exchanges.
